Camhanaich

Camhanaich was Winner of the 2022 UK Build It Awards – Best Timber Frame Home. It also received a high commendation for the Aberdeenshire Architectural & Landscape Awards 2023, Innovative single house design. For good reason this is a project we are extremely proud of.

Located within the rural area of Cushnie, in Aberdeenshire. This remote rural site is surrounded by open fields to the north and east and has areas of woodland to the south & north.

In such a stunning rural location careful consideration was given to how the building form should look and sit on the site. This dwelling has been designed in a staggered H-Plan over a single storey subtly bedding into the landscape around it. The design, whilst evoking a modest contemporary feel, includes elements in the scheme that arouse a historic relation back to the traditional agricultural vernacular which remain within the local area.

The building skin of Camhanaich is clad in Ebony Thermopine Cladding. Apart from the sustainable & aesthetic benefits, this material choice was in direct response to the site context and compliments the landscape in the changing seasons of the Aberdeenshire countryside. The Black Corrugate Steel Roofing compliments the local vernacular and in conjunction with the bespoke designed hidden gutter system recognises the traditional Scottish detail of clipped eaves. This keeps the roof lines simplistic, reduces the building mass and provides a direct relation to period barn style buildings of the 19th & 20th century.

The entrance link has been clad in Red Standing Seam Zinc, providing contrasting materials from the adjacent two black timber-clad forms. This, alongside the local reclaimed pink & grey Granite Stonework section, forms the main entrance feature to the house.

Eoghain Fiddes director of Fiddes Architects
Eoghain Fiddes Architect BSc (Hons), MArch (AAD), ARB, ARIAS

Director / Architect

Having served his time with two well-known Scottish Architect Practices in Glasgow, Eoghain also worked in New Zealand as a Project Architect before establishing Fiddes Architects in 2009 in his native home town Banchory.

With a building contractor as a father and being brought up on a building site it was little wonder that Eoghain knew from a very young age that he wanted to become an Architect. The knowledge gained in those formulative years where every home was a self-build gave Eoghain an excellent foundation in the hands-on side of building which he still draws on to this day.

Eoghain loves what he does and is passionate about all things design related with a strong focus on how things are put together. Responsible for developing the vision of the practice and coordinating the design of projects Eoghain works with a talented team of architects to deliver buildings that improve the life of our clients. Throughout the project process he is directly involved and is passionate about the detail, ensuring that we deliver buildings where the architectural vision has been carried through to completion.

Outside of work Eoghain loves the outdoors, especially camping trips around Scotland with his young family, keeping fit & playing music. At home small scale projects are always on the go,,,,,, building things is in his DNA.
