Hilton of Durris

Hilton of Durris is a working farm with the house sitting central to all life on the farm, The clients brief was to breathe new life in the existing house and make the most of the stunning views to the North and maximise the benefit of the solar gain to the South.

A new pitched roof porch replacing an old cramped conical porch on the west of the house. This now provides a welcoming space which flows through to the new open kitchen & dining space and links around to a cosy living space.

A single story flat roof addition to the south replaces a cold and leaky conservatory to provide a room usable all year round, letting the sunlight enter deep into the plan in the winter but ensures the space is well shaded during the warmer summer months. New, full height sliding doors to the north provide a clear view of Bennachie from the kitchen and allow a visual connection between the front and rear of the house.

The new additions to the building are clad in a deep blue thermo pine shiplap cladding. The colour was chosen as a nod to the heritage of the Dunecht estate of which the farm was previously a part of and provides a bright contrast to the freshly painted render of the old cottage.
