Glencommon

We are very proud to have received a Commendation award from the Aberdeen Society of Architects in 2019 for our Glencommon project.

It also earned us a Commendation award in the Innovative Single House Design category for The Aberdeenshire Architects Landscape Awards 2020.

With views across the Dee Valley this new build family farmhouse sits proudly yet unassumingly on the hill at Glencommon. On approaching the house you are met by a bold blackened larch gable with clipped eaves, the dark tones continue round the corner when the Natural Slate roofing wraps down this gable edge that seamlessly envelops the roof and walls.

The open plan heart of the home for the family takes full advantage of the surrounding countryside views whilst providing morning to evening light, much sought after in the winter months. With a modest budget, room sizes and layouts were kept as simple as possible yet providing the storage and spacial requirements much needed by a family of 5.

The main living part of the building is clad in Siberian Larch natural cladding with openings positioned in direct response to both the internal layout and the aspect. The glazed corner sliding doors provide not only daylight from morning to evening but also a corner breakout to the outside direct from the main living.

By ensuring all details were carefully presented and discussed with the kit supplier and main contractor prior to build a building with an impressive air tightness of 0.44 air changes per hour was achieved and exceptionally low running costs.

The new dwelling at Glencommon has resulted in a low cost, low maintenance building which was completed in an impressive 3 months which was testament to a well organised collaboration between the client, Architect and Contractor.
