Greenbank

Fiddes Architects were appointed by the client to put together a design for a new, contemporary, extension which would complement their existing 1950’s Edwardian style house.

This ground floor extension creates a spacious lounge area to the rear of the house, with access to the garden through a set of sliding doors which form part of a corner window.
Positioned near external planting and vegetation, the corner window brings a touch of the outdoor greenery and verdant aesthetic inside. A generously sized office has been included to the front of the house featuring a large, custom-made desk and shelving arrangement offering ample space for working from home, a requirement made clear in our clients design brief.

The first floor features a new, large primary bedroom suite with an en-suite, along with a newly incorporated family bathroom. The primary suite includes a distinctive, splayed, full-width dormer window with southwest-facing views over the garden whilst the family bathroom and the en-suite share a mirrored splayed dormer window to the front of the house.

This extension is designed with a standing seam zinc wall and roof cladding system as the primary external material, chosen as a modern interpretation of the red clay roof tiles found on the existing house. The zinc standing seams are precisely aligned at specific intervals to match the window jambs and dormer cheeks, creating a structured, regimented appearance for the external facades. A narrow black zinc link provides a subtle visual break between the house and the extension, delicately emphasizing the extension’s ancillary nature.

Timber cladding has been used as detailing material where additional zinc would have proved too dominant. The timber cladding softens the rigidity of the zinc due to its contrasting colour and texture. Additionally, a part-curved, barrel roof ridge helps soften the overall appearance of the extension keeping the proposed ridge height lower than that of the existing house.

Eoghain Fiddes director of Fiddes Architects
Eoghain Fiddes Architect BSc (Hons), MArch (AAD), ARB, ARIAS

Director / Architect

Having served his time with two well-known Scottish Architect Practices in Glasgow, Eoghain also worked in New Zealand as a Project Architect before establishing Fiddes Architects in 2009 in his native home town Banchory.

With a building contractor as a father and being brought up on a building site it was little wonder that Eoghain knew from a very young age that he wanted to become an Architect. The knowledge gained in those formulative years where every home was a self-build gave Eoghain an excellent foundation in the hands-on side of building which he still draws on to this day.

Eoghain loves what he does and is passionate about all things design related with a strong focus on how things are put together. Responsible for developing the vision of the practice and coordinating the design of projects Eoghain works with a talented team of architects to deliver buildings that improve the life of our clients. Throughout the project process he is directly involved and is passionate about the detail, ensuring that we deliver buildings where the architectural vision has been carried through to completion.

Outside of work Eoghain loves the outdoors, especially camping trips around Scotland with his young family, keeping fit & playing music. At home small scale projects are always on the go,,,,,, building things is in his DNA.
